But if you have ever wondered why arrangements are sold in twos, threes or sevens, the answer lies in an old belief carried over from Feng Shui and echoed in Vastu: the number of stalks decides the kind of luck the plant is said to attract. Here is what each count means, and how to choose the right one for your space.

Why the number of stalks matters

In both Feng Shui and Vastu thinking, numbers carry energy. A lucky bamboo arrangement is believed to balance the five elements — wood in the stalks, water in the vase, earth in the pebbles, plus metal and fire added through coins or a red ribbon. The count of stalks then focuses that energy towards a particular blessing, whether that is love, health or wealth. Avoid a 4-stalk arrangement. In Chinese the word for four sounds like the word for death, so it is considered unlucky and is rarely sold or gifted.

Newly married couples often choose two stalks, students and professionals lean towards five for balanced success, and families frequently keep three for everyday happiness. If you want the most auspicious option and have the space, a nine-stalk arrangement is considered the luckiest. Larger towers of 20 or 21 stalks are given as blessings of lasting health and prosperity, often at weddings and housewarmings.

Where to place it as per Vastu

Vastu favours the east for family harmony and health, and the south-east for wealth and money luck — the same directions traditionally linked to the wood and water elements. Keep the plant on a clean shelf or a study table, away from direct afternoon sun that can scorch the leaves. Keeping your lucky bamboo healthy

Meaning aside, a yellowing or drooping plant does little for the mood of a room, so basic care matters. Grow it in filtered or distilled water rather than hard tap water, which can brown the leaf tips, and change the water every one to two weeks. Keep the roots and pebbles covered, feed a very dilute liquid feed occasionally, and wipe dust off the leaves so it stays glossy and green through the monsoon and summer.

Use filtered or rainwater and change it fortnightly. Chlorine and fluoride in city tap water are the most common cause of brown, crispy leaf tips.
