Money Plant Vastu: Where to Place It for Wealth

The money plant (Pothos, or Epipremnum aureum) is one of India's most-loved indoor plants — forgiving, fast-growing and, according to Vastu Shastra, a magnet for prosperity. But placement matters as much as care. Put it in the right corner and it is said to invite steady financial flow; put it in the wrong one, and Vastu holds that it can block the good it might otherwise bring. Here is exactly where to place it, and why.

The best direction: south-east

Vastu recommends the south-east corner of your home or living room for the money plant. This zone is ruled by the planet Venus (Shukra) and presided over by Lord Ganesha, both associated with wealth, luxury and abundance. A trailing plant here is believed to encourage a steady inflow of money and to strengthen financial stability for the household.

South-east also aligns with the fire element, and the money plant's upward, spreading growth is thought to keep that prosperity energy active. If your living room or hall has a south-east corner, that is the ideal spot for a pot or a wall-mounted trailing vine.

Directions to avoid

Never place the money plant in the north-east corner. In Vastu this is the sacred zone of water and worship (the ishan corner, usually reserved for the puja space), and a money plant here is believed to cause financial loss and disagreements. Avoid the north as well, which is governed by Kubera, the lord of wealth — a fire-linked plant can disturb this water-element direction.

If you can only choose between two spots, pick south-east first and a south or west wall second — but keep it well clear of the north-east puja corner.

Indoors or outdoors?

Vastu favours the money plant indoors, where its energy is thought to be contained and concentrated within the home. Grown outside on an open balcony or terrace, it is believed to be more prone to the 'evil eye' and to disperse its wealth-drawing effect. In India's hot, bright climate this suits the plant anyway — it thrives in indirect light near a window rather than in harsh direct sun, which scorches its leaves.

How to keep the energy positive

• Train the vines upward along a moss stick, trellis or wall — trailing on the floor is considered inauspicious.
• Keep leaves green, glossy and dust-free; remove yellowing or dead leaves promptly.
• If growing in water, use a clean glass jar and change the water weekly to prevent stagnation.
• In soil, use a well-draining mix and let the top inch dry between waterings to avoid root rot in humid monsoon months.
• Pinch and prune regularly to encourage bushy, healthy growth.

Water or soil — does it matter for Vastu?

Both are acceptable. A money plant in a glass jar of water suits kitchens and study desks and is easy to keep clean, while a potted plant in soil grows more vigorously and lasts longer. Whichever you choose, health is what counts: a lush, thriving plant is believed to attract wealth, and a wilting, neglected one to work against it.
