Uses

The tender pods are cooked in Indian stir-fries, dry sabzis, curries and sambar, or chopped into thoran and poriyal. As a legume it also fixes nitrogen and improves soil fertility.

Growing tips

Direct sow seeds 2-3 cm deep, spacing 15-20 cm apart at the base of a tall trellis or net. Germination takes 7-14 days in warm soil. Provide sturdy vertical support as vines climb to 2-3 m. Pinch growing tips to encourage branching. Harvest pods young and tender at 50-60 days, while still smooth; frequent picking keeps the plant producing for weeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sowing season for yard long bean in India?
Sow from spring through the monsoon (March to August) when temperatures are warm. As a heat-loving crop it grows poorly in cold weather, so avoid mid-winter sowing in North India.
Can yard long bean be grown in containers?
Yes. Use a deep 12-15 inch pot with a tall trellis or netting. With full sun and regular watering, a couple of vines on a balcony or terrace give a steady supply of pods.
