Uses

Sweet flesh is eaten fresh, juiced or added to summer salads and drinks; the seeds are roasted as a snack and the rind can be cooked or pickled. A classic hydrating summer fruit across Indian households.

Growing tips

Direct sow seeds 2-3 cm deep, two or three to a hill, spacing hills 90-120 cm apart on raised beds. Seeds germinate in 7-14 days in warm soil above 24 C. Train or let vines sprawl with ample room, water consistently while fruit develops, and mulch to keep fruit clean. Hand-pollinate flowers in the early morning if fruit set is poor. Fruit is ready 80-100 days from sowing; a dull skin, dried tendril near the stem and hollow tapping sound signal ripeness.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow watermelon seeds in India?
Sow in spring and early summer, from January to March in most regions, so vines fruit through the hot months. Watermelon needs warm soil above 24 C and plenty of sun.
Can watermelon be grown in containers?
Compact bush varieties can be grown in very large pots or grow bags with strong support, but watermelon's sprawling vines and heavy fruit do best in open ground or spacious raised beds.
