Uses

Grown as long-flowering summer bedding, edging and pot colour for sunny terraces and balconies. Traditionally valued in herbal medicine, though the whole plant is toxic if eaten and is best treated as ornamental only.

Growing tips

Sow seeds about 5 mm deep in trays and cover lightly, as darkness aids germination; keep warm at 22-28 C. Seeds germinate in 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings to 25-30 cm spacing once they have 4-6 true leaves. Give full sun and avoid overwatering, which causes root rot. Plants begin flowering roughly 60-75 days from sowing and continue through the hottest months with almost no care. Pinch early tips for bushier plants.

Frequently asked questions

When can I sow vinca seeds in India?
Vinca can be sown almost year-round in warm regions, but spring (February-April) is ideal so plants are ready for the long summer flowering season. It needs warmth to germinate well.
Is vinca good for growing in pots?
Yes, it is excellent in pots and balcony containers thanks to its compact size, drought tolerance and continuous blooming in full sun.
