Turtle vine (Callisia repens) is a compact, creeping perennial from the spiderwort family, prized for its dense mats of small, rounded, glossy green leaves that often flush purple underneath in good light. Its trailing stems root readily at the nodes, making it a popular spiller for hanging baskets, pots and terrariums.

In Indian homes and gardens it thrives in bright, indirect light and warm conditions, growing quickly to form a lush living carpet. It is easy to propagate and forgiving, which makes it an excellent choice for beginners and for filling out mixed planters.

Care guide

Sunlight Bright indirect light indoors; partial shade outdoors. Avoid harsh midday sun which scorches leaves.
Watering Keep lightly moist in growing season; water when the top 2-3 cm of soil dries. Reduce in winter; avoid waterlogging.
Soil / mix Light, well-draining potting mix; add coco peat/perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage.
Temperature Ideal 18-30 C. Sensitive to cold; protect below 10 C and from frost.
Humidity Prefers moderate to high humidity; tolerates average indoor humidity in most Indian climates.
Fertilizer Feed monthly in spring and monsoon with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength; pause in winter.
Pruning Pinch and trim regularly to keep it bushy and control spread; trailing tips root easily for new plants.
Repotting Repot or refresh soil every 1-2 years, or when roots fill the pot; divide crowded clumps.
Propagation Very easy from stem cuttings or division; nodes root quickly in moist soil or water.
Pests & problems Watch for aphids, mealybugs and spider mites, especially in dry indoor air; rinse and treat with neem oil.

Difficulty Easy

Uses

Spiller plant for hanging baskets and tall pots on balconies and terraces

Fast groundcover for shaded beds and under larger potted plants

Lush filler for terrariums, dish gardens and indoor table planters

Easy beginner houseplant for bright indoor corners

Growing tips

In Indian summers, keep Turtle vine out of direct afternoon sun and water more frequently as pots dry quickly in the heat. During the monsoon, ensure pots drain freely to prevent root rot from constant wet soil.

It grows fastest in the warm, humid months, so do most pruning and propagation then. In cooler northern winters, move plants indoors to a bright spot and cut back on watering.

Frequently asked questions

Is Turtle vine an indoor or outdoor plant in India?
Both. It grows well indoors in bright indirect light and outdoors in partial shade. Just protect it from harsh midday sun and from cold below 10 C.
How do I propagate Callisia repens?
It is very easy. Snip a few stem cuttings with nodes and press them into moist potting mix or place in water; they root within a couple of weeks during warm months.
Why are my Turtle vine leaves losing their purple tint and getting leggy?
This usually means too little light. Move it to a brighter spot with indirect sun and pinch the stems regularly to encourage dense, colourful growth.
