Turtle vine (Callisia repens) is a compact, creeping perennial from the spiderwort family, prized for its dense mats of small, rounded, glossy green leaves that often flush purple underneath in good light. Its trailing stems root readily at the nodes, making it a popular spiller for hanging baskets, pots and terrariums.
In Indian homes and gardens it thrives in bright, indirect light and warm conditions, growing quickly to form a lush living carpet. It is easy to propagate and forgiving, which makes it an excellent choice for beginners and for filling out mixed planters.

Growing tips

In Indian summers, keep Turtle vine out of direct afternoon sun and water more frequently as pots dry quickly in the heat. During the monsoon, ensure pots drain freely to prevent root rot from constant wet soil.

It grows fastest in the warm, humid months, so do most pruning and propagation then. In cooler northern winters, move plants indoors to a bright spot and cut back on watering.
