Uses

Roots are cooked in curries, sambars, parathas and pickles or eaten raw in salads; the vitamin-rich greens are sauteed like spinach. A staple winter root for everyday Indian home cooking.

Growing tips

Direct sow seeds 1-1.5 cm deep, spacing rows 20-25 cm apart and thinning plants to 8-10 cm. Seeds germinate quickly in 3-7 days in cool weather. Keep the soil consistently moist and loose so roots swell evenly. Harvest when roots reach 5-8 cm across, usually 40-60 days after sowing; smaller roots are sweeter and more tender. Avoid letting them over-mature or they turn woody and pungent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to sow turnip seeds in India?
Turnip is a cool-season crop best sown from September to November (the rabi/winter season). In the hills it can also be grown in spring; warm weather makes roots woody and bitter.
How long do turnips take to be ready for harvest?
Most varieties are ready 40-60 days after sowing. Pull roots while they are 5-8 cm across for the sweetest, most tender flavour.
