Uses

Grown as a tall flowering backdrop in beds and along fences, as a butterfly and bee attractant in pollinator gardens, and as a long-lasting cut flower. The leafy biomass is also used as a nutrient-rich green manure and mulch.

Growing tips

Direct sow seeds 1 cm deep, spacing plants 40-60 cm apart, after the last cool spell or with the onset of the monsoon. Seeds germinate in 7-14 days at warm temperatures. Thin seedlings to give each plant room; pinch young tips to encourage bushy, multi-stemmed growth. Provide full sun and stake tall plants in windy spots. Flowering begins about 70-90 days from sowing and continues for months. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering.
