Uses

Young tender fruits are cooked into everyday sabzi, stuffed, added to curries, or made into raita and pickles. A light, mild vegetable, tinda is a summer staple in North Indian kitchens.

Growing tips

Soak seeds overnight, then sow 2-3 cm deep, placing 2-3 seeds per hill with hills or plants spaced 60-90 cm apart. Germination takes 7-14 days in warm soil. Provide a trellis or let vines trail, and water steadily once flowering begins. Harvest fruits young and tender at golf-ball to tennis-ball size, about 55-70 days from sowing; frequent picking keeps the vine productive.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to sow tinda seeds in India?
Sow tinda in summer (February to April) and again at the onset of the monsoon (June to July). It is a warm-season crop that needs heat, so avoid sowing in the cold winter months.
How long does tinda take to be ready for harvest?
Tinda is ready about 55 to 70 days after sowing. Pick the fruits young and tender, around golf-ball to tennis-ball size, when the skin is still soft, and harvest often to keep the vine producing.
