Thimble Cactus (Mammillaria gracilis) is a small, clustering cactus native to Mexico, prized for its neat thimble-shaped stems covered in soft white radial spines. Each stem readily produces offsets that drop and root easily, so a single plant slowly forms a charming cushion of miniature cacti.
In Indian homes it thrives on bright windowsills and balconies, asking only for plenty of sun, a gritty free-draining mix and very sparing water. Mature plants may produce small creamy-yellow flowers near the crown, usually in the warm months.
Its compact size, slow growth and forgiving nature make it one of the easiest cacti for beginners and an ideal choice for small pots, dish gardens and succulent arrangements.

Care guide
| Sunlight |
Bright light; 4-6 hours of direct sun. A sunny south/east window or balcony is ideal. Acclimatise gradually to harsh summer afternoon sun. |
| Watering |
Water only when the soil is fully dry, soaking then draining. Roughly every 10-15 days in summer; nearly stop in monsoon and winter to avoid rot. |
| Soil / mix |
Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix; e.g. equal parts potting soil, coarse sand and perlite or fine gravel. Avoid water-retentive soil. |
| Temperature |
Comfortable at 15-35 C. Tolerates heat well; protect from cold below 7 C and from frost. |
| Humidity |
Prefers low to moderate humidity; dislikes damp, stagnant air. Keep well ventilated during the monsoon. |
| Fertilizer |
Feed a dilute low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser once a month only during the active growing season (spring-summer); none in winter. |
| Pruning |
No pruning needed. Simply remove shrivelled or rotted offsets and gently detach pups to propagate or reshape the clump. |
| Repotting |
Repot every 2-3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot with drainage holes; let the plant settle a few days before watering. |
| Propagation |
Very easy from offsets/pups: detach a stem, let it callus for 2-3 days, then place on dry gritty mix; it roots in a few weeks. |
| Pests & problems |
Generally trouble-free; watch for mealybugs, scale and root rot from overwatering. Treat pests with neem oil or a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. |
| Toxicity / safety |
Non-toxic to humans and pets, but the spines can prick; keep out of reach of small children and curious pets. |
| Difficulty |
Easy |

Growing tips

Summer (Mar-Jun): Main growing season; give bright sun, water when fully dry and feed monthly. Shade from the most intense afternoon sun in very hot regions.

Monsoon (Jul-Sep): The danger period for rot. Move under cover, ensure sharp drainage and good airflow, and cut watering right back.

Winter (Nov-Feb): Keep almost dry and in a warm, bright spot; protect from cold drafts and frost in north India.
