Tarragon - Herb Seeds

Specifications

Family Asteraceae
Native region Eurasia and western North America
Mature height 60-90 cm
Growth rate Moderate

Care guide

Sunlight Full sun to light shade
Watering Moderate; let the soil dry slightly, dislikes wet roots
Soil / mix Light, sandy, well-drained soil
Fertilizer Light feeding only; rich soil weakens the aroma
Difficulty Moderate

Uses

The aromatic leaves flavour sauces, herb butters, salad dressings, vinegars, chicken, fish and egg dishes. Use fresh or dried; a little goes a long way thanks to its strong anise-like taste.

Growing tips

Surface-sow the tiny seeds and barely cover with about 3-5 mm of fine soil, keeping them in trays or small pots. Germination is slow and uneven, taking 14-21 days in warm, bright conditions. Transplant seedlings 30-45 cm apart into free-draining pots once they have a few true leaves. Harvest sprigs lightly from about 80-90 days, snipping the tips to keep the plant bushy.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to sow tarragon seeds in India?
Sow tarragon in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild. It dislikes intense heat and heavy monsoon moisture, so the cooler months give the slow-germinating seeds the best chance.
Can tarragon be grown in pots?
Yes, and pots are recommended in India because they give the sharp drainage tarragon needs. Use a sandy mix in a pot kept under cover during heavy rain, and you can harvest fresh leaves through the season.
