The pink trumpet tree or pink ipe (Tabebuia avellanedae, also known as Handroanthus impetiginosus), is a medium-sized ornamental tree prized for its stunning spring flush of rosy-pink to magenta trumpet-shaped flowers that cover the leafless branches. It is increasingly planted as a flowering avenue and garden tree in India's towns and cities.

Beyond its ornamental appeal, the tree's inner bark (known as pau d'arco or lapacho) has a long history of medicinal use in South America. In India it grows well in the warm plains and lower hills, in parks, road medians and gardens, preferring full sun and deep, well-drained soils, and is grown in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Bengal.

  • Family: Bignoniaceae
  • Native region: tropical Central and South America
  • Mature height: 8–15 m
  • Growth rate: moderate

Sowing the seed: the thin, winged, papery seeds require no pre-treatment; surface-sow them on a moist, well-drained seed mix, press in lightly without covering, and keep warm and humid. Germination takes about 14–21 days. Transplant the seedlings into bags once they have several leaves and plant out after they reach 30–40 cm.
