The silver trumpet tree (Tabebuia argentea, also known as Tabebuia aurea), is a small to medium ornamental tree grown for its brilliant display of bright golden-yellow trumpet-shaped flowers that smother the bare crown in spring. Its distinctive silvery, crooked branches and grey-green leaves make it a favourite landscape specimen.
It is one of the most popular flowering avenue and garden trees in urban India, planted in parks, road medians and home gardens for its eye-catching bloom and tidy size. The tree is drought tolerant and undemanding, thriving in the warm plains in full sun and well-drained soils, and is widely grown across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the Deccan.
- Family: Bignoniaceae
- Native region: tropical South America
- Mature height: 6–10 m
- Growth rate: moderate
Sowing the seed: the flat, papery winged seeds need no pre-treatment; surface-sow them on a moist, well-drained seed mix and press in lightly without burying, keeping warm and bright. Germination takes about 14–21 days. Pot on the seedlings once they have a few leaves and plant out after they reach 30–40 cm.
