Growing tips

Soak seeds overnight, then sow 2 cm deep, spacing plants 15-20 cm apart at the base of a trellis or support. Germination takes 10-15 days in cool weather. Pinch the tips when seedlings are 10-15 cm tall to encourage branching, and guide the tendrils onto the support. Flowering begins about 70-90 days from sowing; pick blooms regularly and remove spent flowers to prolong the season.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to sow sweet pea seeds in India?
Sow sweet peas in autumn, from late September to November, for winter and spring flowering across most of India. They need cool weather, so the months after the monsoon give the best results.
Can sweet peas be grown in pots on a balcony?
Yes. Use a deep, wide pot with a small trellis or netting against the railing. Keep it in good sun, water regularly and pinch the young tips, and you will get plenty of fragrant blooms on a balcony.
