Sweet lime or mosambi (Citrus limettioides) is a compact evergreen citrus tree grown for its mild, sweet, low-acid juicy fruit, hugely popular across India for fresh juice. Bearing fragrant white blossoms and glossy aromatic leaves, it is both productive and ornamental. Well-suited to warm tropical and subtropical climates, mosambi crops generously and adapts well to pots and small gardens. The thin-skinned greenish-yellow fruit is refreshing and easy to digest. Given full sun, sharp drainage and regular feeding, sweet lime is a rewarding, relatively easy citrus that supplies wholesome juice straight from the garden.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water sweet lime?
Keep the soil evenly moist, watering when the top inch dries, about twice a week and more in summer, while ensuring good drainage.
How much sun does mosambi need?
Sweet lime needs full sun, at least 6 hours daily, for healthy growth and abundant sweet fruit; shade reduces yield and sweetness.
Is sweet lime safe for pets?
It is non-toxic to humans, but citrus oils can mildly irritate cats and dogs, so prevent pets from chewing the leaves or fruit.
When should I repot a potted mosambi?
Repot every 2-3 years into a larger pot with fresh, well-drained citrus mix, ideally just before the spring growth flush.
How do I propagate sweet lime?
Grafting and air-layering are the reliable methods, giving true-to-type, faster-fruiting plants; cuttings also work with some patience.
Why are my mosambi leaves yellowing?
Yellowing usually points to overwatering or micronutrient deficiency. Improve drainage and apply a citrus fertilizer containing iron, zinc and magnesium.
When does sweet lime flower and fruit?
It flowers in spring and other flushes, with fruit maturing over the following months, often giving the main crop in winter in warm climates.
Can mosambi be grown indoors?
It can survive in a very bright window, but fruits best outdoors on a sunny balcony or terrace with strong direct sunlight.
Is any part of sweet lime toxic?
No, sweet lime is non-toxic to people; the fruit and juice are wholesome. Only the citrus oils may mildly irritate sensitive pets.
What fertilizer does mosambi need?
Feed a citrus-specific fertilizer or NPK with micronutrients monthly during the growing season for lush foliage and sweet, juicy fruit.
