Uses

Fresh kernels are boiled or roasted as bhutta, added to soups, salads, pulao and snacks, or creamed. Picked young and eaten the same day, home-grown sweet corn is far sweeter than store cobs.

Growing tips

Sow seeds 2-3 cm deep directly where they will grow, spacing plants 20-25 cm apart in blocks of at least 3-4 short rows for proper wind pollination. Germination takes 7-10 days in warm soil. Earth up the base for support and water consistently once tassels appear. Cobs are ready to harvest in 70-90 days, when silks turn brown and a pressed kernel releases milky juice.
