The suru tree or Australian pine (Casuarina equisetifolia) is a fast-growing evergreen tree with fine, drooping, needle-like branchlets that give it a pine-like appearance, though it is not a true pine. It is one of the most important coastal plantation and shelterbelt trees in India, extensively planted along the sandy seaboards of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat.

It is valued for excellent fuelwood and charcoal, poles, scaffolding and pulpwood, and its root nodules fix nitrogen, helping it colonise barren sandy soils. As a windbreak and sand-dune stabiliser it shields crops and settlements from coastal winds and erosion. It tolerates salt, drought and poor soils and grows rapidly in the warm coastal plains.

  • Family: Casuarinaceae
  • Native region: coastal Australia and Southeast Asia
  • Mature height: 15–25 m
  • Growth rate: very fast

Sowing the seed: the tiny seeds need no pre-treatment; surface-sow them thinly on a moist, sandy seed mix and press in lightly without burying, keeping shaded and humid. Germination is quick, usually within 7–14 days. Prick out the slender seedlings into bags and plant out once 25–40 cm tall at the start of the rains.
