Stylosanthes scabra, shrubby stylo (Stylosanthes scabra), is a tough, woody-based perennial pasture legume grown for drought-season forage and soil restoration, not as a tree. Like other stylos it fixes nitrogen and is a valued component of improved tropical pastures, silvi-pasture and degraded-land rehabilitation.
It forms an erect, branching subshrub that remains productive deep into the dry season, supplying protein-rich grazing and fodder for livestock. The plant is exceptionally drought hardy and tolerant of poor, acidic soils, and is widely used to revegetate eroded and infertile land in the semi-arid regions of central and southern India.
- Family: Fabaceae (legume)
- Native region: tropical South America
- Mature height: 0.5–1 m
- Growth rate: fast
Sowing the seed: scarify the hard-coated seed lightly to overcome dormancy, then broadcast or drill it about 1 cm deep into a firm seedbed with the onset of the monsoon. Germination usually occurs within 7–14 days. The legume establishes readily, persists for several years and reseeds itself, needing minimal management.
