Sterculia alata, the Buddha coconut or buddha nut (Sterculia alata, also known as Pterygota alata), is a tall, handsome deciduous tree of moist tropical forests. It is named for its large, woody, globular fruit that splits to release flat winged seeds, and is planted as a striking avenue and shade tree.

The light, soft wood is used for packing cases, plywood and matchwood, and the tree is valued as an ornamental for its straight bole and spreading crown. It is native to the moist forests of the northeast, the Western Ghats and the Andaman Islands, growing best in deep, fertile, well-drained soils with good rainfall.

  • Family: Malvaceae (formerly Sterculiaceae)
  • Native region: moist tropical forests of India and Southeast Asia
  • Mature height: 25–35 m
  • Growth rate: moderate to fast

Sowing the seed: soak the winged seeds in water for 24 hours, then sow them flat about 2 cm deep in nursery bags of rich, moist soil. Germination typically takes 21–30 days. Keep the seedlings in light shade and transplant them to the field at the start of the rains once they are sturdy and 30–45 cm tall.
