The African tulip tree (Spathodea campanulata) is a large, fast-growing evergreen tree famous for its flamboyant clusters of cup-shaped, orange-scarlet flowers held high in the canopy. It is one of the most popular ornamental and avenue trees in tropical India, planted in parks, gardens and along roads for its spectacular bloom and dense shade.

Beyond its ornamental value it serves as a quick shade and screen tree, and its soft timber is occasionally used for light work; the flowers attract sunbirds and other nectar feeders. It grows well in the warm, humid plains and coastal regions of southern and eastern India, preferring deep, moist, well-drained soils and full sun.

  • Family: Bignoniaceae
  • Native region: tropical West Africa
  • Mature height: 12–20 m
  • Growth rate: very fast

Sowing the seed: the seeds are thin, papery and winged and need no pre-treatment. Surface-sow them on a moist, well-drained seed mix and press in lightly without burying, keeping warm and humid. Germination takes about 14–21 days. Transplant the seedlings into bags once they have a few leaves and plant out after they reach 30–40 cm.
