Uses

A top choice for winter flower beds, borders and pots, and an excellent long-lasting cut flower for vases. Dwarf types edge pathways and fill window boxes, while tall types give height and colour to mixed seasonal displays.

Growing tips

Surface-sow the tiny seeds in trays from September to November (they need light to germinate, so do not bury them); press gently and mist. Germination takes 7-14 days at 18-22°C. Transplant seedlings 20-30 cm apart when they have 4-6 true leaves. Pinch the growing tip early to encourage bushy, multi-spike plants. Deadhead spent spikes to prolong blooming, which begins about 70-90 days from sowing and continues through winter and early spring.
