Uses

Tender fruits are cooked into South Indian kootu, North Indian sabzi, dals and stir-fries. The vine is also valued for shading garden trellises and pandals, and the long ornamental fruits are a talking point in any home plot.

Growing tips

Sow seeds 2-3 cm deep directly at the base of a strong trellis or pandal, spacing hills 60-90 cm apart. Soak seeds overnight to speed sprouting; germination takes 7-14 days in warm soil (25-35°C). Pinch the growing tip once vines reach the support to encourage side branches and more female flowers. Tie a small weight to young fruits so they grow straight. First harvest comes in about 60-70 days; pick fruits young and tender (40-60 cm) every few days to keep the vine productive.
