Senecio ficoides 'Mount Everest' is an evergreen succulent shrub native to South Africa, grown for its striking chalky blue-green, finger-like waxy leaves that hold water and tolerate heat and drought. The powdery coating gives the foliage a frosted look and helps it cope with strong sun.
In Indian conditions it thrives as a low-maintenance container or rockery plant, forming an upright clump that can be trimmed to shape. It is well suited to balconies, terraces and bright windowsills, needing very little water once established.
This succulent is valued more for its sculptural foliage and texture than its flowers, making it a popular accent in modern, water-wise and xeriscape plantings.

Care guide
| Sunlight |
Bright light to full sun; at least 4-6 hours of direct sun for best colour. Tolerates light afternoon shade in very hot regions. |
| Watering |
Water only when soil is fully dry; deep but infrequent. Reduce sharply in monsoon and winter to avoid rot. Never let it sit in water. |
| Soil / mix |
Fast-draining gritty/sandy succulent mix; add sand, perlite or cocopeat. Avoid heavy clay or water-retentive media. |
| Temperature |
Ideal 18-30 C. Tolerates Indian summer heat well; protect from frost and cold below about 5 C. |
| Humidity |
Prefers dry, airy conditions; low to moderate humidity. Dislikes humid, stagnant air. |
| Fertilizer |
Light feeding only; dilute balanced or low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer once a month during active growth. Skip in monsoon and winter. |
| Pruning |
Trim leggy or overgrown stems to maintain shape; pinch tips to encourage bushiness. Remove damaged leaves. |
| Repotting |
Repot every 2-3 years or when root-bound, ideally in spring, using fresh gritty mix and a pot with drainage holes. |
| Propagation |
Easily from stem or leaf cuttings; let cut ends callus for 1-2 days, then plant in dry succulent mix and water sparingly. |
| Pests & problems |
Generally pest-resistant; watch for mealybugs, aphids and root rot caused by overwatering or poor drainage. |
| Toxicity / safety |
Mildly toxic if ingested; Senecio species contain alkaloids that can harm pets, livestock and children. Keep out of reach. |

Easy |

Growing tips

In Indian summers, give bright light but shield from the harshest mid-day sun in extremely hot, dry regions to prevent leaf scorch.

The monsoon is the biggest risk: move pots under cover, hold back watering and ensure free drainage to avoid root and stem rot. In winter keep it dry and warm, watering only occasionally.

Use shallow terracotta pots with drainage holes and a gritty mix; let the soil dry out completely between waterings for healthy, compact growth.
