Senecio crassissimus, popularly called Vertical Leaf Senecio or Lavender Steps, is an attractive upright succulent from Madagascar. Its distinctive flattened, oval leaves are held vertically on the stem to reduce sun exposure, and they take on a striking blue-green hue with purple-violet margins that deepen under bright light.
Reaching about 30-60 cm in cultivation, it forms neat clumping stems and is well suited to Indian homes, balconies and rock gardens where heat and low water are the norm. In bright conditions it may produce small yellow flowers on tall stalks.
Like most succulents it is low-maintenance, drought-tolerant and ideal for container growing, but it needs sharp drainage and protection from heavy monsoon rain to avoid rot.

Care guide
| Sunlight |
Bright light; full sun to partial sun. Best leaf colour in 4-6 hours of direct sun; protect from harsh afternoon sun in peak summer. |
| Watering |
Low. Water only when soil is fully dry (soak-and-dry). Reduce sharply in monsoon and winter to prevent root rot. |
| Soil / mix |
Very well-draining gritty mix; cactus/succulent soil with added sand, perlite or cocopeat. Avoid heavy, water-retentive soil. |
| Temperature |
Thrives at 18-32 C. Tolerates Indian summer heat; protect below 5 C as it is not frost-hardy. |
| Humidity |
Prefers low to moderate humidity. Ensure good airflow during the humid monsoon season. |
| Fertilizer |
Light feeder. Apply dilute balanced or low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer once a month during the active growing season only. |
| Pruning |
Minimal. Trim leggy or damaged stems; pinch tips to encourage branching. Cuttings can be replanted. |
| Repotting |
Every 2-3 years or when rootbound, into a slightly larger pot with fresh gritty mix; best done in spring. |
| Propagation |
Easy from stem cuttings or leaves; let the cut end callus for a few days before planting in dry succulent mix. |
| Pests & problems |
Generally pest-resistant; watch for mealybugs, aphids and root rot from overwatering or poor drainage. |
| Toxicity / safety |
Toxic if ingested. Senecio species contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids harmful to pets, children and livestock; keep out of reach. |

Easy |

Growing tips

Summer: Give bright light but shade from extreme afternoon sun; water only when the mix dries out fully.

Monsoon: Move pots under cover or to a rain-protected spot, cut back watering, and ensure free drainage to avoid rot in heavy humidity.

Winter: Keep nearly dry and in a warm, sunny position; growth slows, so stop feeding.

Use a terracotta pot with a drainage hole for best results in Indian conditions.
