Echinopsis oxygona, the Sea Urchin or Easter Lily Cactus, is a popular clustering globular cactus with a ribbed, urchin-like green body bearing short spines. Native to South America, it is treasured for its spectacular, large, fragrant trumpet-shaped flowers in soft pink to white that open from long tubes, often at night or early morning, and last a day or two. It offsets freely to form clumps and is one of the easiest cacti to bloom, even for beginners. Hardy, drought-tolerant and undemanding, it rewards a sunny windowsill or balcony with a dramatic seasonal flower display.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Echinopsis oxygona?
Water when the soil dries during the warm growing season, about every 1-2 weeks, and keep it nearly dry through winter to avoid rot.
How much light does it need?
Full to bright light with several hours of sun keeps it healthy and flowering well. Low light leads to weak, pale, non-blooming growth.
Is the Sea Urchin Cactus safe for pets?
It is non-toxic, but its spines can injure curious pets and people, so place it out of reach.
How do I propagate it?
Detach the offsets, or pups, from the base, let them callus for a few days, then plant in dry, gritty cactus mix. It can also be grown from seed.
When should I repot it?
Repot every 2-3 years in spring, handling it carefully with padding, into a slightly larger pot with very free-draining mix.
Why won't my cactus flower?
It usually needs strong sun and a cool, dry winter rest to bloom. Without that dormancy and enough light, flowering is sparse.
How long do the flowers last?
The large trumpet flowers are short-lived, often lasting only a day or two, but a healthy plant can produce several in a season.
Why is the base turning soft or brown?
A soft, browning base indicates rot from overwatering or poor drainage. Reduce watering and ensure the mix drains very freely.
Can it grow indoors?
Yes, on a very bright, sunny windowsill. It needs strong light to stay firm and to flower, so a dim spot will not suit it.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed with a diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once or twice during the growing season to support its abundant blooms.
