Uses

Grown as a showy pot, basket and bedding flower for its dense clusters of orchid-like blooms, ideal for shaded balconies, window boxes and cool-season displays. The intricate flowers also make a delightful indoor table plant when in full bloom.

Growing tips

Sow the fine seeds in a tray and barely cover with 2-3 mm of soil; they germinate best in darkness, so cover the tray and keep cool at 16-18°C. Germination takes 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings when 4-5 cm tall, spacing 20-25 cm apart in a sheltered, partly shaded spot. Pinch tips for bushier plants. First blooms appear about 100-120 days after sowing.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow schizanthus seeds in India?
Sow from September to November in the plains for blooming through the cool winter and spring months. In hill stations it can be sown in spring. It needs cool, mild weather, so avoid summer sowing entirely as heat prevents germination and flowering.
Can schizanthus be grown in pots?
Yes, it is excellent in pots, window boxes and hanging baskets. Use rich, well-drained soil, keep it in bright indirect light or partial shade, and maintain even moisture for a long-lasting bloom display.
