Uses

Grown as a showy pot, basket and bedding flower for its dense clusters of orchid-like blooms, ideal for shaded balconies, window boxes and cool-season displays. The intricate flowers also make a delightful indoor table plant when in full bloom.

Growing tips

Sow the fine seeds in a tray and barely cover with 2-3 mm of soil; they germinate best in darkness, so cover the tray and keep cool at 16-18°C. Germination takes 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings when 4-5 cm tall, spacing 20-25 cm apart in a sheltered, partly shaded spot. Pinch tips for bushier plants. First blooms appear about 100-120 days after sowing.
