A favourite bedding and border flower for vivid colour blocks, edging and mass planting, and equally good in pots and window boxes. The nectar-filled spikes make the garden a hub for bees, butterflies and sunbirds.

Growing tips

Surface sow or barely cover the seeds with 2-3 mm of fine soil as they need light to germinate; keep warm at 22-25°C. Germination takes 7-15 days. Transplant seedlings when 5-6 cm tall, spacing 25-30 cm apart. Pinch the growing tips early to encourage bushy plants with more spikes, and deadhead to extend flowering. First blooms appear about 70-90 days after sowing.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow salvia seeds in India?
Sow from September to November in the plains for colourful winter and spring flowering. In hilly regions, sow in spring after frost. The seeds need warmth and light to germinate, so press them onto the surface rather than burying them.
Can salvia be grown in pots?
Yes, salvia grows beautifully in pots and window boxes of at least 20-25 cm width. Use fertile, well-drained soil, place in full sun to light shade, and deadhead spent spikes to keep the blooms going.
