Sagargota or Fever Nut (Caesalpinia bonduc) is a robust, scrambling thorny shrub of the pea family, armed with hooked prickles and bearing prickly pods that contain hard, smooth, grey, marble-like seeds. It thrives in coastal thickets and waste ground.
Found along the coasts and dry scrublands of peninsular India and the islands, it is highly valued in Ayurveda and folk medicine: the bitter seed kernels are a renowned remedy for fevers, malaria, colic and worms. The dense, thorny growth also makes it a useful protective hedge and live fence around fields and homesteads.
- Family: Fabaceae
- Native region: tropical coasts of India and the Old World
- Mature height: 3-6 m (scrambling)
- Growth rate: fast
The stony grey seeds have an extremely hard coat and will not germinate untreated. Scarify them by filing or nicking the coat, then soak in water for 24-48 hours until swollen, and sow about 2-3 cm deep in polybags of sandy soil. Germination then takes around 21-30 days; transplant the seedlings once they are 15-20 cm tall.
