Munja (Saccharum munja, syn. Saccharum bengalense) is a tall, tussock-forming perennial grass with stout culms and long silvery flowering plumes. It forms dense, deep-rooted clumps that hold soil firmly together.

Native to and widespread across the plains, riverbanks and ravines of northern and central India, Munja is a classic erosion-control and sand-binding grass used to stabilise gullies, embankments and degraded land. Its tough culms and leaves are woven into ropes, mats, baskets and thatch, making it an important rural cottage-industry and agroforestry species.

  • Family: Poaceae
  • Native region: Indian subcontinent
  • Mature height: 2-4 m
  • Growth rate: fast

The seeds are very fine and light-dependent, so surface-sow them thinly on a firmed, moist seed-tray mix and do not bury them. Keep the surface consistently damp and warm; germination takes about 14-21 days. Prick out the small clumps and transplant them once well rooted, spacing generously as the plants build into large tussocks.
