Uses

Grown as a bedding and border flower for its long-lasting golden blooms, ideal for mass planting, cottage-style beds and large containers. The sturdy stems make fine cut flowers, and the blooms draw pollinators into the garden.

Growing tips

Surface sow or barely cover the seeds with 2-3 mm of fine soil as they need light to germinate; keep at 20-25°C. Germination takes 7-21 days. Transplant seedlings when they have 3-4 true leaves, spacing 30-40 cm apart in full sun. Pinch early to encourage branching and deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering. First flowers appear about 90-110 days after sowing.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow rudbeckia seeds in India?
Sow from September to November in the plains for cool-season flowering through winter and spring. In hilly regions, sow in spring after the frost. Avoid sowing in peak summer heat which weakens the seedlings.
Can rudbeckia be grown in containers?
Yes, the more compact varieties grow well in large pots of at least 25-30 cm width placed in full sun. Use well-drained soil and deadhead regularly to keep the flowers coming.
