Uses

The aromatic leaves season roast vegetables, potatoes, breads, soups and grilled paneer, and are steeped for a fragrant herbal tea. Sprigs are also used in infused oils and as a natural insect-repelling plant near doorways.

Growing tips

Sow seeds shallowly about 3-5 mm deep in a seed tray of gritty mix; germination is slow and erratic, taking 14-28 days at 20-25°C, so be patient. Keep the surface barely moist, not wet. Transplant seedlings to individual pots once 8-10 cm tall, spacing 40-50 cm apart. Place in full sun and let the soil dry between waterings. Light leaf harvest can begin once plants are well established, around 120-150 days from sowing.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow rosemary seeds in India?
Sow in the cooler months from October to February in the plains, when temperatures are mild. In hilly and cool regions it can be started in spring. Avoid sowing in peak summer or heavy monsoon as wet, hot conditions cause poor germination and root rot.
Can rosemary be grown in pots?
Yes, rosemary does very well in pots provided drainage is excellent. Use a wide terracotta pot with gritty, sandy soil, place it in full sun, and water only when the topsoil dries out.
