Rama Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum, the green-leaved Holy Basil) is an aromatic, soft-stemmed perennial herb sacred in Indian households. It forms a bushy subshrub of bright-green, fragrant leaves and slender spikes of small mauve-white flowers that draw bees and butterflies.

Grown all over India in gardens, courtyards and pots, Rama Tulsi is among the most important medicinal and ritual plants of the subcontinent: the leaves are taken for coughs, colds, fevers and immunity, used in herbal teas, and the whole plant repels mosquitoes and insects. Its clove-scented foliage also makes it a pleasant ornamental and culinary herb.

  • Family: Lamiaceae
  • Native region: Indian subcontinent
  • Mature height: 0.3-0.6 m
  • Growth rate: fast

The seeds are tiny and need light to germinate, so surface-sow them on a fine, moist seed-tray mix and press in gently without covering. Mist to keep the surface damp and warm (25-30 C); seedlings appear in about 7-14 days. Prick out and transplant when they have 3-4 true leaves, and pinch the growing tips to encourage a bushy habit.
