Uses

Crisp roots are eaten raw in salad, grated into mooli paratha, or cooked as sabzi and in sambar. The tender leaves make a nutritious saag. A quick, refreshing addition to the home table.

Growing tips

Direct sow seeds 1-1.5 cm deep, spacing rows 15-20 cm apart and thinning plants to 5 cm. Germination takes 3-7 days. Sow in deep, loose soil so the roots can lengthen without forking. Keep watering steady to prevent woody, pungent, split roots. Quick round types are ready in 25-35 days and long mooli in about 45-55 days; pull while young and crisp.
