The English Oak (Quercus robur) is a large, long-lived deciduous hardwood with a broad spreading crown, lobed leaves and the familiar acorns borne on long stalks. It is prized worldwide for its exceptionally strong, durable timber and for the wildlife its acorns support.
Not native to India, it is planted successfully in the cooler temperate hill stations and higher reaches of the Himalaya, Nilgiris and similar elevations, where it serves as an ornamental avenue and parkland tree and a source of premium furniture and construction timber. It needs a genuine winter chill and deep, moisture-retentive soil to thrive.
- Family: Fagaceae
- Native region: Europe and the Caucasus
- Mature height: 20-40 m
- Growth rate: slow
Acorns are recalcitrant and must be sown fresh. Float-test and discard floaters, then give them 6-8 weeks of cold stratification (moist sand at 2-4 C) to break dormancy. Sow about 3-5 cm deep, pointed end down, in deep pots; germination follows in around 30 days or more once warmth returns. Transplant while the taproot is still short, as oaks resent root disturbance.
