Bauhinia purpurea, the Purple Bauhinia or Kachnar, is a much-loved deciduous flowering tree of the Indian subcontinent. It is instantly recognised by its twin-lobed, butterfly-shaped leaves and its showy, fragrant flowers, which resemble orchids in shades of pink, magenta and purple. Blooming mainly in autumn and winter, it puts on a spectacular display, followed by long flat pods. The tender buds and flowers (Kachnar) are also used in traditional Indian cooking and medicine. Hardy, fast growing and adaptable, it makes an excellent avenue, garden or temple tree, thriving across most of India's plains and lower hills.
