The Karnikara or Kanak Champa (Pterospermum acerifolium) is a tall, fast-spreading evergreen tree of the mallow family, recognised by its very large maple-shaped leaves that are silvery-felted beneath. Through the warmer months it bears big, fragrant, creamy-white flowers that open at night, followed by woody capsules packed with winged seeds.

It is grown across the sub-Himalayan tract, the north-east and moist parts of central and southern India as a handsome avenue and shade tree; the broad leaves are traditionally used as leaf-plates, while the light, even-grained timber is worked into planks and packing cases and the flowers and bark have folk-medicinal uses. Its dense, glossy canopy makes it a favoured ornamental for parks, campuses and roadsides.

  • Family: Malvaceae (formerly Sterculiaceae)
  • Native region: sub-Himalayan India, Indo-Burma
  • Mature height: 15-30 m
  • Growth rate: moderate to fast

Sow the winged seeds fresh, as viability falls quickly. Soak them in water for 24 hours, then sow about 1-1.5 cm deep in a sandy potting mix in seed trays or polybags. Germination usually takes 14-21 days in warm, humid conditions; prick out and transplant the seedlings once they are 20-30 cm tall and the rains are well established.
