The Guava (Psidium guajava) is a small, fast-growing evergreen-to-semi-deciduous tree grown throughout India for its fragrant, vitamin-C-rich fruit. It has smooth, mottled bark, prominently veined leaves and white flowers, and crops heavily and reliably even with little care. One of the country's most popular fruit trees, it is grown commercially and in countless home gardens for fresh eating and for jams, jellies and juices.
The leaves are widely used in traditional medicine, particularly for digestive complaints, and the hard wood is used for fuel and small tools. Adaptable and hardy, guava grows across the plains and lower hills of India on a wide range of soils, tolerating heat, drought and some waterlogging.
- Family: Myrtaceae
- Native region: Tropical America; widely naturalised in India
- Mature height: 3-10 m
- Growth rate: Fast
Scoop the many small seeds from ripe pulp, wash them clean, and soak for 12-24 hours (a brief warm-water soak helps soften the coat). Sow shallowly, about 0.5-1 cm deep, in a moist, well-drained mix kept warm; germination usually takes 2-3 weeks. Prick out the seedlings into bags; note that named varieties are usually grafted, as seedlings vary in fruit quality.
