Velvet Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora), known in India as Vilayati Babool, is a fast-growing, thorny, drought-hardy tree introduced for afforestation of dry and degraded land. It forms a dense, spreading crown of feathery leaves and bears long, yellow, sugary pods. Tough and aggressive, it is a major source of fuelwood and high-quality charcoal, while its pods are used as livestock fodder and it is valued for stabilising sand dunes and reclaiming saline wastelands.

It thrives on the poorest, driest, most saline and alkaline soils across arid and semi-arid India, withstanding extreme heat and prolonged drought. Note that it is also a vigorous, often invasive colonizer that can displace native vegetation, so it should be planted thoughtfully.

  • Family: Fabaceae (Mimosoideae)
  • Native region: Central and South America; naturalised across arid India
  • Mature height: 5-12 m
  • Growth rate: Fast

The very hard seed coat must be broken: pour hot water over the seeds and soak overnight, or scarify them, before sowing. Sow about 1-2 cm deep directly in the field or in nursery bags of sandy soil; germination is rapid, usually within 1-2 weeks. Seedlings establish quickly and are extremely tough once rooted.
