Uses

Grown as an ornamental winter bedding and pot plant, it brightens shaded balconies, windowsills, indoor table displays and the edges of cool-season flower beds. A favourite for adding colour where the sun is too weak for most flowers.

Growing tips

Surface sow the fine seeds and barely cover, pressing gently as they need light to germinate; keep cool at 16-20°C. Germination takes 14-21 days and can be uneven, so be patient. Transplant seedlings to pots or beds when they have 3-4 true leaves, spacing 15-20 cm apart. Keep them shaded and cool. Plants begin flowering about 90-120 days after sowing, giving weeks of colour through winter.
