Portulaca, or moss rose, is a low-growing succulent annual that revels in heat, sun and dry conditions where most flowers wilt. Its fleshy, needle-like leaves carpet the ground while jewel-bright single or double blooms in red, pink, yellow, orange, white and magenta open in the sunshine. Perfect for hot terraces, rockeries, edging and hanging baskets, it asks for almost nothing but sunlight and sharp drainage. Flowering all through the Indian summer and monsoon, portulaca is one of the toughest, most rewarding flowers for difficult dry, sunny spots, spreading quickly into a vivid living carpet.
