Uses

Grown as an ornamental bedding and cottage-garden flower, poppies fill sunny borders and beds with airy seasonal colour and make charming, if short-lived, cut flowers. The decorative seed pods are also used in dried arrangements.

Growing tips

Poppies dislike root disturbance, so direct sow where they are to grow. Surface sow the fine seeds and barely cover, as they need light to germinate; mix with sand for even spreading. Keep at 15-20°C; germination takes 10-20 days. Thin seedlings to 20-25 cm spacing rather than transplanting. Sow in succession for a longer display. Flowering begins about 60-90 days after sowing through the cool season.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow poppy seeds in India?
Sow from October to December for flowers through the cool winter and spring. Poppies need cool weather to grow well, so avoid sowing into the summer heat in the plains.
Can poppies be grown in pots?
They can be grown in deep pots, but because they have a delicate taproot and resent transplanting, it is best to direct sow the seeds into their final container or bed and thin the seedlings rather than move them.
