Beaucarnea recurvata, popularly called the Pony Tail Palm or Elephant Foot Palm, is not a true palm but a succulent member of the asparagus family. Its most striking feature is the bulbous, water-storing 'caudex' at its base, topped by a tuft of long, curling, strap-like leaves that resemble a flowing pony tail.
Native to the semi-arid regions of eastern Mexico, it is superbly suited to Indian indoor conditions because it stores water in its swollen trunk and tolerates neglect, dry air and infrequent watering. Indoors it stays a manageable tabletop or floor accent plant for many years.
It is prized as a low-maintenance, architectural houseplant that thrives in bright light, making it a favourite for living rooms, balconies and office desks across India.

Care guide
| Sunlight |
Bright indirect light indoors; can take some direct morning sun. Tolerates a few hours of full sun outdoors but avoid harsh afternoon summer sun. |
| Watering |
Water sparingly; let the top 5-7 cm of soil dry fully between waterings. Roughly once a week in summer, every 2-3 weeks in winter. Overwatering causes rot. |
| Soil / mix |
Fast-draining, gritty mix; a cactus/succulent potting mix or potting soil amended with sand and perlite. Never use heavy, water-retentive soil. |
| Temperature |
Ideal 18-30 C; tolerates up to ~38 C. Keep above 10 C and protect from frost and cold drafts. |
| Humidity |
Tolerates dry indoor air well; no extra humidity needed. Suited to most Indian indoor environments. |
| Fertilizer |
Light feeder. Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring-monsoon); none in winter. |
| Pruning |
Minimal. Trim brown or damaged leaf tips and remove dead lower leaves. Do not cut the growing tip. |
| Repotting |
Slow grower; repot only every 2-3 years or when root-bound, into a slightly larger pot. It actually flowers and grows better when somewhat pot-bound. |
| Propagation |
Difficult at home; mainly from seed, or by removing offsets (pups) that form at the base of mature plants. |
| Pests & problems |
Generally pest-resistant. Watch for spider mites, mealybugs and scale, especially in dry indoor air; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap. |
| Toxicity / safety |
Non-toxic to humans, cats and dogs; considered a pet-safe and child-safe houseplant. |
| Difficulty |
Easy |

Growing tips

Summer: Keep in bright light and water about once a week; the plant grows actively in the warm season, so feed lightly once a month.

Monsoon: Move it under cover or to a sheltered spot to avoid waterlogging, and ensure the pot drains freely so the swollen base never sits in water.

Winter: Reduce watering sharply to every 2-3 weeks, stop feeding, and keep it warm and away from cold drafts. Wrinkling of the caudex signals it needs water; a soft, mushy base signals overwatering.
