Plumeria rubra, the fragrant frangipani or champa, is a small deciduous tree prized for its intensely perfumed, waxy flowers in shades of red, pink, yellow and white. Spiral clusters of blooms top thick, sculptural branches from spring through monsoon, while the bold leaves drop in cooler months. Easy to grow and remarkably drought-tolerant once established, Plumeria thrives in Indian heat and sun, making it a favourite for temples, courtyards and large containers. Its sweet evening fragrance and tropical form bring instant character to gardens. Tolerant of poor soils and neglect, it rewards minimal care with abundant scented flowers.

Growing tips

Across India, plant Plumeria in a hot, sunny spot with gritty, free-draining soil and reduce watering in winter when it goes dormant. Cuttings root readily after curing the cut end for a few days.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Plumeria?
Water deeply but let the soil dry out between waterings. Reduce sharply in winter dormancy, as overwatering causes root and stem rot.
How much sun does Plumeria need?
It needs full sun, at least 6 hours daily, to bloom well. In shade it grows weakly and produces few or no flowers.
Is Plumeria safe for pets?
The milky sap is toxic and irritating if eaten, so keep pets and children from chewing leaves, stems or flowers; wash skin after contact.
When should I repot Plumeria?
Repot every 2-3 years before the growing season. It tolerates being slightly potbound, which can even encourage flowering.
How do I propagate Plumeria?
Cut a 30-45 cm hardwood branch, let the end dry and callus for several days, then plant in dry sandy mix and water sparingly until rooted.
Why is my Plumeria not flowering?
Insufficient sun, too much nitrogen, or a young plant are common causes. Give full sun and a high-phosphorus bloom fertiliser in the warm season.
Why are there orange spots under the leaves?
That is plumeria rust, a fungal disease. Remove affected leaves, improve air circulation, and apply a suitable fungicide if it spreads.
Can Plumeria grow in pots?
Yes, it grows well in large, free-draining containers and is easy to move indoors or under cover during cold or heavy monsoon spells.
Is Plumeria sap dangerous?
The white sap can irritate skin and eyes and is toxic if ingested. Wear gloves when pruning and avoid contact with the milky latex.
What fertiliser helps Plumeria bloom?
Use a high-phosphorus, low-nitrogen bloom fertiliser every 2-3 weeks during active growth; stop feeding as the plant enters winter dormancy.
