Plumbago zeylanica, known across India as White Chitrak, is a sprawling evergreen perennial shrub native to the Indian subcontinent. It produces slender, semi-climbing stems and bright green oval leaves, topped through much of the year with spikes of pure white, five-petalled flowers carried on sticky, glandular calyces that cling to passing animals and clothing.

Exceptionally tough and drought-tolerant once established, it thrives in the hot plains of India and flowers freely in warm weather. It is widely grown both as an ornamental for hedges, borders and pots and as a traditional medicinal plant, its pungent root (Chitrak) being a classic Ayurvedic digestive remedy.

Frequently asked questions

Is White Plumbago (Chitrak) safe for pets and children?
No. Its root and sap contain plumbagin, which can irritate skin and cause stomach upset if eaten. Plant it where children and pets cannot chew it, and wash hands after pruning.
How often does White Chitrak flower?
In warm Indian regions it flowers for much of the year, with the heaviest flush from the monsoon through winter. Full sun and light pruning after each bloom encourage more white flowers.
How do I propagate Plumbago zeylanica?
It is easily grown from stem or root cuttings taken in the warm season, which root quickly in well-drained soil. It can also be raised from seed.
