The Cliff Date Palm (Phoenix rupicola) is widely regarded as the most graceful of the date palms, with a slender, clean trunk and a soft, lush crown of finely divided, glossy-green fronds that arch outward in an open, feathery spray. Native to the rocky slopes and cliffs of the eastern Himalaya, it makes an elegant ornamental and specimen palm for gardens, courtyards and avenues where a refined, tropical look is wanted.

It grows naturally in the foothills of Sikkim, Bhutan and north-east India, favouring well-drained rocky ground with moisture, and adapts well to cultivation in warm, humid parts of the country with some shade when young.

  • Family: Arecaceae (palm family)
  • Native region: Eastern Himalaya and north-east India
  • Mature height: 5-8 m
  • Growth rate: Slow to moderate

Clean off the fruit pulp and soak the seeds in warm water for 2-3 days. Sow about 2 cm deep in a moist, well-drained sandy mix kept warm and humid. Germination is slow and staggered, usually taking a month or more; grow the seedlings on in light shade and transplant once they have several leaves.
