The Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) is a majestic solitary palm prized worldwide as a landscape specimen. It carries a massive crown of long, arching, deep-green feather fronds atop a stout, patterned trunk, creating a bold tropical silhouette in parks, avenues, resorts and large gardens. Though its small orange fruits are not eaten, the tree is grown purely for its grandeur and stately presence.

It adapts well to India's warmer plains and coastal cities, tolerating heat, wind and salt spray, and once established withstands moderate drought. It prefers full sun and deep, well-drained soil where its large root system can develop.

  • Family: Arecaceae (palm family)
  • Native region: Canary Islands
  • Mature height: 15-20 m
  • Growth rate: Slow to moderate

Remove all fruit pulp and soak the seeds in warm water for 3-5 days before sowing, as the pulp inhibits germination. Sow 2 cm deep in a sandy, well-drained mix kept warm (28-35 C) and humid. Germination is slow, commonly taking one to three months; pot the seedlings on and grow for a year or more before transplanting to their final position.
