Philodendron xanadu (often sold as 'Xanadu Green') is a robust, self-heading tropical foliage plant prized for its dense rosette of glossy, deeply lobed dark-green leaves. Unlike vining philodendrons, it forms a neat, bushy clump that stays compact, making it a popular choice for pots, balconies and shaded landscape beds.

Native to Brazil and a member of the arum family (Araceae), it thrives in the warm, humid conditions found across most of India. It tolerates a wide range of light, from bright indirect indoor light to dappled outdoor shade, and asks for very little care once established.

It is valued in Indian homes, offices and gardens for its lush, architectural look and its ability to purify indoor air while withstanding the heat of Indian summers.

Growing tips

Place it in bright, filtered light away from harsh direct sun. During the hot, dry pre-monsoon months (April-June), mist the foliage and check soil moisture more often.

Ease off watering during the monsoon to prevent root rot, ensuring the pot drains well. In north India, move the plant indoors or to a sheltered spot during cold winter nights below 10 C.
