Growing tips

Surface sow the dust-fine seeds and do not cover them, as they need light to germinate; press gently onto a moist, fine seed mix. Keep at 20-25°C; germination takes 7-14 days. Mist carefully to avoid washing seeds away. Transplant seedlings when they have 4-5 true leaves, spacing 20-25 cm apart. Pinch tips early to encourage bushy plants and deadhead spent blooms regularly. Flowering begins about 70-90 days after sowing and continues through the cool season.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow petunia seeds in India?
Sow from September to November so plants flower through the cool winter and spring months. In the plains petunia is grown as a winter annual; in hill stations it can be sown over a longer cool season.
Can petunias be grown in pots and hanging baskets?
Yes, they are ideal container plants. Use a well-drained pot or basket in full sun, feed every couple of weeks and deadhead often; trailing varieties cascade beautifully over basket and railing edges.
