Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus), known as Sadabahar, is one of India's most reliable flowering plants, blooming almost continuously through the year. It forms a neat, bushy mound of glossy dark-green leaves topped with five-petalled flowers in pink, white, rose, magenta or bicolour with a contrasting eye. Extremely heat- and drought-tolerant, it thrives in beds, borders, pots and balconies with very little care and self-seeds readily. Beyond ornament, it is a well-known medicinal plant, though all parts are toxic if eaten. Its non-stop colour, toughness and ease make it a perennial favourite for beginner and busy gardeners alike.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Periwinkle?
Water moderately, letting the topsoil dry between waterings. It is very drought-tolerant and far happier slightly dry than waterlogged.
How much sun does it need?
It blooms best in full sun with at least 5-6 hours of direct light but also tolerates light part shade.
Is Periwinkle safe for pets?
No. All parts contain alkaloids that are toxic if eaten, so keep it away from pets and children despite its medicinal reputation.
How do I repot or refresh it?
In pots, refresh the soil or repot annually in spring; in beds it usually self-seeds and renews itself readily.
How do I propagate it?
It grows easily from seed or from soft stem cuttings rooted in moist, well-drained soil during the warm season.
Why are the leaves yellowing?
Yellowing usually signals overwatering or poor drainage leading to root rot. Let the soil dry more and improve drainage.
When does it bloom?
In India's warm climate it flowers almost continuously through the year, slowing only in cold winter spells.
Can I grow it indoors?
It needs strong light to flower, so it is best on a sunny balcony or outdoors rather than deep indoors.
Is it really toxic?
Yes, all parts are poisonous if ingested even though the plant is a famous source of medicinal compounds; do not eat it.
What fertilizer should I use?
A light balanced feed every few weeks is plenty; it flowers well even in poor soil, so avoid over-fertilizing.
