Leaves flavour chutneys, raita, mojitos, lemonade and herbal tea, and the menthol is used in home remedies for colds and digestion. The plant also helps repel some insects near doorways and pots.

Growing tips

Surface sow the tiny seeds and press lightly without burying (they need light to germinate); keep at 20-25°C. Germination takes 10-15 days. Mist gently to keep the surface damp. Transplant seedlings to pots when 4-5 cm tall, spacing 20-25 cm apart. Pinch tips regularly to bushy up. First leaf harvest begins about 60-70 days after sowing and continues for years.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow peppermint seeds in India?
Sow from February to March or in the cooler post-monsoon weeks of September-October. In hilly and cool regions it can be sown through most of the year; avoid the peak summer heat.
Can peppermint be grown in pots on a balcony?
Yes, pots are actually the best way to grow it. A 20-25 cm wide pot in partial shade with moist, compost-rich soil keeps its spreading roots controlled and gives a steady supply of leaves.
